River Front ThenRiver Front Now

A view of Sioux City's riverfront, past and present. Taken from the upper level of the Sawyers Block in 1870, the photo shows the levee during the 'Steamboat Capital' era of Sioux City. A photograph from a similar angle in 1994 captures part of Sioux City's Auditorium, the parking lot, Gordon Drive and the Anderson Dance Pavilion.

As we consider Sioux City, past and present, we look to our origins, the roots from which we grew.

The first people to live in this area were ancestors of those we know today as American Indians. These inhabitants lived here thousands of years before the people of Spain and France arrived. While it is unclear who was the first white man to explore the area which is now Sioux City, it is commonly believed to be one of the early French or Spanish fur traders. The first recognized explorers to document their travels through this area were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark during the summer of 1804.

While we continue to create history daily all over the world, we invite you to explore Sioux City's history - your link to the past.
